Greetings from West Erie Bible Presbyterian
Church in
In a WORLD magazine article (February 7, 2004, p.25) a Barna Research Group study was cited, which stated that only about 51% of Protestant pastors in the USA hold to core biblical beliefs or to a world view grounded on the Bible. The illustration accompanying the piece, which depicts a shepherd leading his flock into the gaping jaws of a giant wolf, underscores the deadly nature of the situation. Of course, the finger of blame can be pointed in many directions (humanistic professors, worldly-minded congregations, self-serving ministers, etc.), but the only real corrective, protective, and instructive measure is a return to, and a full trust in, the Word of God, the Bible, which God has given to his Church for her well being. We, the elders and members of WEBPCA, are founded upon this view of the Bible.
But a biblically based Church and Christian life should not be seen as a defensive, bunker philosophy, a hunkering down until heaven arrives. Certainly this world is full of deception, of superficial distracting pleasures, of constant disappointment, of misery, and then death, all of which the Bible addresses. But the Scriptures also provide the only source of true confidence and of a genuinely full and joyful life now, even in the midst of difficulties. That’s because the Bible alone has the truth of how a person can be forgiven of sin (and so be at peace with God), can know him and approach him as Father now, and can have God’s assurance of a perfect life with him forever!
